About the place

The garden was founded in 1952, when the 'Fântâna Jianu' park was handed to the Agronomic Institute of Craiova, now part of the University. The idea came from Professor Alexandru Buia (1911–1964), whose name it has carried since 2002. It was planned as a place of study for agronomy and horticulture students, but it is also open to the public.

By the entrance on Strada Iancu Jianu is the ornamental section with flower beds. To the north and east, earth hills up to 30 m high gather plants from the different regions of Romania, and in the centre, around the lake, the plants are arranged by family. Along the paths you will see swamp cypresses (Taxodium distichum) with their roots rising out of the water, and the old Jianu Fountain.
